I don't think my chimney is drafting the way it should. I dont think it is tall enough how do I tell?

When a masonry chimney is built, we use the 10 & 2 rule: the chimney should be a minimum 10' away from the slanted roof and a minimum 2' higher then that point at 10' away. That way the roof line doesn't interfere with the chimney drafting.

You should find a local chimney sweep (yup, they still exist) to check it out. A fireplace is not something that should be maintained by amateurs, unless you don't mind if your house burns down.

My experience is that they do a lot more than just clean them.

wellll... if the fireplace smokes it isn't drawing. it isnt just the height but the height relative to the size of the throat and inside diameter of the flue. there are quite a few good books on this at lowes, home depot, etc. . i would read up on it before i attempted a repair or hiring someone. good luck.

If it's above the highest peak or other obstructions such as trees it's high enough,if it's dirty or not very cold it won't pull a good draft
