1) Reason this out. The French king was never ransomed but beheaded. The French Revolution occurred in 1789 and the Franco-Prussian War in 1870-71, so the jewels would not have been around so long. Logic governs action, so the Directory sold them.

2) True, many times. After the final defeat and exile of Napoleon, there was the restoration of the Bourbons, Louis XVIII and Charles X. A revolution overthrew Charles X in 1830, resulting in a parliamentary monarchy of King Louis Phillipe. He was overthrown in 1848. After a brief romance with the Second Republic, the president, Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, declared himself Emperor of the French, and ruled from 1852 until 1870.

3) Treatment of minorities. The empire was something left over from the middle ages in which the Habsburg family ruled what they had inherited. The emperors could never get used to the fact that their provinces and associated kingdoms were never the same as nationhood as the 19th and 20th centuries advanced.

4) Abolishment of serfdom! The second (or first greatest?) greatest thing that ever happened in Russia. P.S.: He was assassinated. You just can't win for losing!
