The pilgrims settled in Massachusetts (they were aiming for Virginia) for the purpose of being able to practice their religion without interference from the King of England.

Virginia was settled for economic development.

Georgia was settled to be a prison for enemies of the king.

I'm not going to list each individual one. Sorry. However, I can tell you the New England colonies (as in, the North East), were founded for religious freedom, and the Chesapeake colonies (as in, the South) were founded for more economical reasons.
