Ok, everyone answered your question already. I just wanted to add that I bled for a very short time (like maybe a week and a half) very lightly. My doc said this is because they "clean you out" after a section. I dunno. Just my two cents.

I had a c-section May 2005. I bled just the same as a vag birth, which was right away (both bleed from where the placenta detaches from the uterus). But, the Dr. suctioned out a lot of the blood, so I only bled for about a week and a half.

The bleeding after a c-section is the same as for a vaginal birth.
You begin bleeding right away, and it's caused by the uterus trying to heal itself and get rid of the lining that was there during pregnancy.
Yes, the placenta comes out with the baby. (Doctor removes it)
I was always jealous of the ladies that had a natural birth......
They were up and around sooner!

The reason that you bleed after a c-section (although the baby comes out of your STOMACH and not your vaginal opening) is because of the fact that your cervix is now open, just like it was before you got pregnant. That means that any additional blood that's in your uterus will still come out the "traditional way", regardless of how your baby was delivered (although with a c-section, the bleeding is lighter due to the decreased amount of trauma to the birth canal).
I hope that this is the answer you were looking for.

The bleeding is from where the placenta was attached to your uterous, so you would bleed with a c-section just like from a vaginal birth.

I had 2 c-sections and both times I bled immediately. I bled so much that when I was finally able to get up and walk I ended up making a big mess that the nurse had to clean up.

You bleed for many reasons after birth.
For one thing while pregnant the lining of your uterus, as it is thicker just before your period. This lining is of course shed during menstruation, so is it shed after childbirth.
