My husband and I are looking to move to WA with our one year old daughter from Los Angeles area. He is originally from Port Townsend, but we wanted to be closer to a big city were there is more job opportunities. We were initially looking at Olympia, but then headed north towards south Tacoma Area. Are there any good areas and if there are where are they specifically. Help, we want to move soon!

I too wouldn't recommend moving to Tacoma. Here is an article from a few years ago that I thought you might find useful in making the decision:

You might consider living somewhere on the east side of Washington, like Bellevue, Kirkland, Issaquah or Redmond. There are plentiful jobs in this area as well and it's much better for raising a family.

The other larger city that I'd recommend is Bellingham. It's beautiful and is large enough that there are jobs, but small enough that you can feel comfortable raising a family there.

In any case, good luck to you and your family!

Moved to Tacoma from the East Coast 2 years ago and love it. I've lived in a range of cities in the East Coast, South, and Midwest and Tacoma, yes Tacoma, is a great place to live and raise a family (I have 2 kids). Affordable is relative but coming from SoCal you should be fine. Tacoma has a problem with people throughout the region repeating bad things they've heard about Tacoma from 20 years ago - strange. As someone who has lived in cities and neighborhoods where crime was a problem I can tell you that Tacoma isn't one of those places. Tacoma also has school choice for new students entering the district - so, you get to pick the school that is best for your kid. Anyway, check out a blog from Tacomans and see what they have to say.

Tacoma is not known for being a good city. There is the aroma, plus Tacoma has the highest crime rate in washington. Vashon is a great place to live, Bonney lake is kinda nice. Puyallup is always nice.

Welcome to the area then! I would suggest staying away from Tacoma, I wouldn't want my child going to school in that area. There is a lot of crime there, marginally higher than in Seattle.

a great place to live, work and shop, but a terrible place to breath, the smell from the wood pulping piles near the port carry all the way from olympia, to federal way. but to somebody it smells like money!
