My computer is randomly restarting and the internet is randomly cutting off. I have cable internet, and a Windows XP home edition computer. Our computer has been restarting for about a week and the internet shutting off for about three or four days. We have left it on usually all the time for the four or five years we have had it but it has never done anything like this. We have tried turning it off when we're not using it and it has helped but it still restarts. The time range from restart to the next restart has been from 15 mins. to 3 hrs. but usually around 45 mins. to 1 hr. The # of programs we have used have been from 1 prgm. to 5 or 6. We have attempted to also do a system restore, but it has said that we've changed nothing to the computer. I've searched everything I know to search and tried everything and I can't find nothing. We've done a full virus scan about 3 times and still cannot find anything. It is really getting frustrating so please respond A.S.A.P. Thank You!

The usual causes for random shutdowns are:
>Overheating triggers auto-shutdown to protect the CPU;
>Memory module going bad;
>Power supply going bad.

Im not a computer repair specialist but I had one that did similar and was told it was the power supply I ended up having to purchase a new power supply and all was good. You may think of getting another case though I have seem them for as low as 30.00 depending on the kind you may need. Something I was told to try when it was happening to me was open the case and make sure its unplugged and blow out the inside as well as make sure everything inside it firmly connected CAREFULLY. Hope this may help a little.

The power supply is most likely the culprit. It is the most comm component to fail.. You might also try a program called memtest86. google it. You then place it on a boot disk or cd and boot into the program. It will run and tell you if any memory errors occur. If they do, then there is a good chance that it is the memory.
