There's this gay teacher in my school, no lie. I'm not against or with gays, but my friends made a small joke about him and I was like "How gay IS Mr. -----?" and then when I turned around, he was standing right next to me, wide-eyed and sad looking. I've really always just wanted to get along with him and let him know I had nothing against him since everybody makes fun of him everyday. I don't know if he really heard me or not, but I want to let him know without straightforward telling him that I have nothing against him and I'm sorry that I discriminate sometimes.

Write a letter, and leave it on his desk or in his mailbox. Then you don't have to do it in person which is a lot less awkward. That's what I did when i wanted to apologize to my teacher, for different reasons however, and she really appreciated it.

I think you need a two step approach. First, you need to speak with the person making the joke and let them know that you would rather that they not make that sort of joke around you again in the future. Without that, the second part is a bit meaningless...right? Second, you need to speak directly with the offended party. You need to own up to your role, whether he heard the joke or not. Your role was that you were tolerant toward a joke that you should have have tolerated. Let him know that you won't be tolerant in the future, that you value the offended party as a person, and that you hope that he will accept your apology. This needs to be done in person on both fronts...it is not enough to allow yourself to use email like so often we do.

I would just apologize & tell him you have nothing against his life style & you don't feel the same way your friends do & you are sorry if you said anything to hurt his feelings. You may have to be straightforward. It is cruel that your friends are that way. But, on the other hand I firmly believe NOBODY should approve of his life style, either. Being gay is terribly wrong!!!

I think the letter thing is a good idea. For one thing, if you're not sure if he heard you or not, just say that you feel guilty because you've make fun of him. You don't have to say what you said, or mention the gay thing at all. Just say, I've made fun of you, I'm not proud of myself and I'm sorry.

you gotta pay the price- a public insult requires a public retraction... But you'll feel better after it's over, and you did the right thing.
