When i power it up. Sometimes it gets recognized and I can access it in windows, sometimes it does not. Sometimes it gets recognized out of the blue as a removable drive (exp. Memory stick) Then works for a while then just vanishes off windows. I checked the warranty off Western Digital's site and it has no warranty, which is a joke because it is a 160 Gigabyte SATA hard drive that I have not even had for 2 years. I would like to try to get it to work , what are my options ?

Yeah, thats what sets apart Hard Drive makers...Their warranty support ( or lack there of) when one of their drives go bad. I usually buy Maxtor Hard Drives , just because their warranty is around 4 years.

Since its going to go in the trash anyways, is there anyway I can try to do (take it apart ? ) to save it?

Nope, never dropped it.

I just turned it on its side standing up and it started working.....I have access to it right now.. Its not clicking , running very quiet. Maybe a stablizer inside is not working right.

I get some "cycle redundancy errors" on some of the files on the Hard drive when I try to move them off.

Yeah, the hard drive is gone, It's not worth repairing.

First, don't mess with the hard drive, it's only going to get worse.
Second, Buy a new hard drive, install an Operating system and software and so on, etc.
Third, Install the broke drive as a slave drive.

Fourth, Try to copy as much as you can to the new hard drive.
Fifth, remove and chuck the broke hard drive.

If you are new to computer repair, it is best left done to a professional, though it is possible if you have time an energy to do it yourself.

The data can be retrieved by a specialist data recovery facility but it is very expensive.

You can't take it apart to repair it without a "Clean Room"

A drive that has problems will generally fail very soon after symptoms appear.

Sometimes you can get the drive to work long enough to get the data of.

Put in in a zip lock plastic bag - like a lunch bag - and put the HDD in the freezer for a few hours. Re install into your computer and cross your fingers. It may work long enough to copy the data to a replacement HDD.

You get just one shot at the freezer trick. It works or it doesn't and there is no second go.

It sounds like the drive is getting worse... I'm not sure. I would try to run the thing for only ten minutes, then STOP. Turn everything off. Then turn it on after ten minutes of OFF TIME, then try to work for just TEN minutes, saving more files. Don't try to run TESTS on it until you have saved everything.

After you have saved everything, I would FORMAT it again, and run test after test after test. The point is, you've saved your data. Regardless of the warantee, you don't want to lose data. If the thing is not working after reformatting, just CHUCK IT. (I've had this problem with a Maxtor external, fortunately, I have backups).

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Reformat drive. I love WD is all i use now. Seems like I'm the only one that has had problems with Maxtor, but do love that Maxblast software they have. Best bet is to save all your information you want (files, folders, music, photos, etc.) and then try to reformat your drive.

Yeah what he said! Start copying files quick! WD use to be a good hard drive but I stopped usin them years ago due to the failure rate increasing. Maxtor still rules in my opinion!

If you open up the HD, it is automatically a dead drive; ,just one speck of dust can kill it.
