If you don't have a router but both computers have a wireless adapter, you could set up an Ad-Hoc network.

ask 2 – Change Network Settings

3. Make sure TCPIP is installed on each client, and that it is configured for each computer on your network. (Check the network settings. If you have a network adapter installed or know you have an IP address, then TCPIP is probably already active.)
* If you are using Windows' built-in Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) set all client computers up to use DHCP.
* If you are not using ICS, manually configure each computer as follows:
IP Address: 192.168.0.x where x represents a number between 0 and 255.
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
* If you are familiar with subnetting, you can use a different addressing scheme.

Task 3 – Configure All Wireless Adapters

4. Configure the wireless network adapter options for each device according to its documentation. You should examine the following settings (common to most models):
* Activate Ad Hoc mode. Most adapters support Infrastructure (access point) and ad hoc (peer) modes. Make sure Ad Hoc is the active mode.
* Turn on WEP. If your wireless network adapter does not enable encryption by default, activate this option to protect your network. It will allow you to set additional options (shown below).
* Set the Service Set ID (SSID). Enter a unique, identifying name for your wireless network. Make sure you use the same name for all wireless devices on the network. This is similar to a password, so choose something that cannot easily be guessed.
* Set the Channel. Select the channel over which all wireless devices will use to communicate. Make sure you set up the same channel on all wireless devices.
* Set the WEP encryption level. Most cards support multiple levels of encryption, ranging from 64-bit to 256-bit. The higher, the better, although high settings may impact performance slightly. All devices should be set to use the same encryption level.
5. Shut down all systems, then turn on a single device.
6. Turn on the remaining devices one by one.
7. Test each wireless device to see if you can access other devices on the wireless network.
* If you want to access the Internet in a peer-to-peer environment, you must either install a router or set up IP sharing through a host computer.

To connect two computers via wireless connection, assuming both have a wireless card, set them both to ad-hoc connections. You DON'T need to have an access point/router to do this.

Then, when you enable the wireless connection, each computer can see each other.

Enable WPA encryption

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please note that the Wireless Router or the Wireless Access Point should also support WPA security in order to enable WPA in Windows XP as the Notebook's Wireless Network Adapter does have that option. Please contact the Manufacturer of the Wireless Router / Access Point for more details on enabling WPA in the router / access point.

======================================================================================================

To enable WPA we need to configure the WPA settings in Windows XP. If the Customer has already updated the driver and installed the Windows XP update in that order, then you may continue with performing the steps to configure WPA settings present at the link given below. If the updates are not done in the other order, then first install the drivers for the Wireless LAN card and then install the Windows XP update to enable WPA again.

===Update LAN Express drivers===

Download and install updated LAN Express IEEE 802.11 Wireless Driver from either of the below mentioned URLS:

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software1/ob832/ob832mu/HP_WLAN.exe

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericSoftwareDownloadIndex?cc=us&lc=en&softwareitem=ob832mu&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

NOTE: Clicking the link may give an error indicating it is invalid. If this occurs, copy the portion of the address on the remaining line(s) and paste it at the end of the address showing in your browser until the complete address is displayed in the Address box.

===Microsoft Update===

You can download the Windows XP update to support WPA from either of the below mentioned URL:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5039EF4A-61E0-4C44-94F0-C25C9DE0ACE9&displaylang=en

NOTE: Clicking the link may give an error indicating it is invalid. If this occurs, copy the portion of the address on the remaining line(s) and paste it at the end of the address showing in your browser until the complete address is displayed in the Address box.

=== Configure WPA settings===

Then follow the steps at the following link to configure WPA settings to enable WPA in Windows XP:

http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/expertzone/columns/bowman/03july28.asp

NOTE: Clicking the link may give an error indicating it is invalid. If this occurs, copy the portion of the address on the remaining line(s) and paste it at the end of the address showing in your browser until the complete address is displayed in the Address box.

Good Luck and Happy Computing..........
