My 10 month old doesn't mash food in his gums, but sucks on it and repeatedly spits it out and then sucks it back in. He does this with everything, baby food, goldfish, cheese, etc. I'm afraid he'll choke on some of the things I give him and it's also VERY messy. Has any other moms experienced this?

A little odd, but all babies are different. You just happen to have a messy eater. He'll get better with time.

Sounds like he is playing too much. It's probably just a phase. just tell him no and try to keep working with him. He might not be hungry. I know my son does that when he's really not hungry. I just put the food to the side and try again a little later. he did that tonight so I don't sit and play around with him he'll eat when he's hungry.

*lol* My son is a chipmunk too. If he is really hungry he eats otherwise he just carries it around. Looks at it once in awhile and puts it back in his mouth.

Don't worry he won't choke, and here is why:

This is one of the many reasons I do not feed pureed food. Not the least of which is my son will NOT allow anyone to put a spoon in his mouth, he has to do it himself.

I let him eat off my plate. I find large pieces work better as he will carry them in his hand rather than his mouth and he can take whatever size bite he wants rather than letting me decide.

Talk to your doctor, if you're still worried, ask for a referral to a feeding specialist. A speech pathologist who is trained to work with babies who have feeding issues can evaluate your child's ability to control the food in his mouth.

my kids did it too! I was told they were playing with their food. I was also scared to death they were going to choke but mine are now 6 and 4 and they never did!

No, Stella. Your child is weird from the beginning...

His father was like that and look at him now.
