Ever since my craving for tomatos has died down, I have had the worst heartburnh. My doctor told me only to take Tums, but that does nothing. Do any experienced moms have any sugggestions or home remedies?

Yes, I am two months pregnant, which is why I have cravings, asked for experienced mom's opinions, and posted this under pregnancy, but thanks for the concern.

Peppermints, Lemon drops (helps with morning sickness too), A piece of dry bread (absorbs the acid for temporary relief), jalopeneos (seriously, it works, at least for me). Also aviod carbonated drinks, during all of my pregnancies carbonation has given me terrible heartburn.

DO NOT take baking soda and water while pregnant! You can't take that, Brioschi, Pepto-Bismol, or any of those sorts of cures. Some people swear by the milk/vinegar cures, but they didn't work for me. Neither did elevating my head, avoiding certain foods, eating frequent, small meals, or making sure I had nothing tight around my waist. Rolaids and Tums never worked. For a while, I took Mylanta and kept it in the fridge. The cold really took the edge off. When Mylanta stopped working, I moved on to Zantac. Eventually my OB told me to take twice the over-the-counter maximum dose every day. And then I got a prescription for Prevacid. And that finally and absolutely solved the problem. I never experienced heartburn again during my pregnancy, and I quit taking it the day my daughter was born. Second pregnancy...same deal. I understand not wanting to take meds if you don't have to. And I used to think, "What's the big deal about heartburn? It's not THAT bad..." but this was like having acid eat its way through my chest. I couldn't eat, or sleep, and I was always uncomfortable. After the OB ruled out a gall bladder problem, we just decided to be aggressive about treating the symptoms. Good luck.

I could only take tums too, but it was ok to eat them like candy. Also, stay away from acidic or spicy foods - pizza, spaghetti sauce, etc.

It sucks - I know - I had it every single day for 9 months. Just keep chewing those tums!

Hopefully someone will post a great, safe suggestion. Tums is all I've got - other than moral support!

I was diagnosed with GERD Gastroesophagal Reflux Disease. My mom, sister and two aunts have Acid Reflux. I got pregnant in August 06 and doctors told me that I could take Prilosec OTC everyday throughout my entire pregnancy and I did. Not once did I have heartburn. It is also safe for the baby. So everyday, I took my prilosec and my prenatal vitemine. I miscarried later in November, but I still take both of my pills. The prenatal vitamine allows your hair and nails to grow and that's why most women keep taking them. The prilosec helps with heartburn, acid reflux and my condition which is gerd. Tums did nothing for me. Ask your doctor about prilosec. I take it everyday as do two of my other pregnant friends. Good luck!

my doc said it was OK to take Maalox. it helped better than the tums, but it still doesn't take it away completely. also try to stay upright for 45 minutes after you eat this will help. and eat small meals through out the day instead of 3 big ones. just know in the end as soon as you deliver, the heartburn goes away. good luck!!

Papaya extract. Works for many moms. I just used calcium carbonate (like tums) but that worked for me.

Edited to Add:
Prilosec is pregnancy category C!

From the Prilosec patient info:

Ugh I can't copy my copy of adobe is killing me. Anyway go read it is not recommended during pregnancy.

If you are looking for prescription drug info your best resource is your Pharmacist. Drugs are all they do and most of them keep very up to date.

Check it out I have heartburn extremly bad. My doctor gave me nexium and i was back to normal. I could eat anything but I had to go get a perscription all the time. So I asked what else there was and he gave me a trial of prilosec and it works awesome and you can get it over the counter no perscription. It was a life saver. Trust me and go try it you will thank me.

If you were using the regular strength Tums, try switching to the Extra Strength Tums, I felt so much better when I did.

You posted this under pregnancy . . are you pregnant ?
Anything pressing into the stomach can cause heartburn, whether a baby or something else.
If you are preg, I think you can take tums to get by until you deliver . . . if you are not . . . get the doctor to order you an MRI, because mine was a large liver cyst by my stomach.
