ok this happened to my cuz, what you have to do first is:
find out what the drive is called, (e.g samsung lm368)
you do that by opening device manager and finding your cd drive there.
THEn you try to find the drivers for it over the internet. type thename in google and go on special websites that you find. (www.cddrivers.com has alot of them)
if you cant find the drivers, try rolling the driver back.
if THAT doesnt work, take it to your local pc world. they do a system service that revamps and cleans out yoour system, taking out all the bugs, reinstalling and updating all the drivers, adnthings. this does NOT delete everything!
if that doesnt work, i dotn now what you can do

1. Check the data cable and power cord connections to the drive. Is the stripe on the data cable correctly aligned to pin 1?
2. Is another device using the same port settings? Check system resources listed in Device Manager. Is there an IRQ conflict with the IDE primary or secondary channel or the SCSI host the drive is using?
3. Suspect a boot virus

You could try checking the ribbon or SATA (serial ata) cable to be sure it is connected properly. Be sure to check both ends. Otherwise try disconnecting the cable and restart the machine and then reconnect the cable and restart the machine. Hopefully the second time it will go through the add new hardware routine. If not it could be possible you have a dead drive.
One other thing when checking the cables would be to make sure the power cable is attached.
Another thing to check could be is the jumper settings on the drive.
