How to override the governor?

I have an 05 Chevy Colorado with the I-4 engine. The engine or the tranney has a governor that kicks in when my vehicle spped reaches 100 mph. How can I override this governor. Is it an electronic thing or mechanical. If it electronic what chip will i need.

It's controlled by the computer and you have to get the computer reprogrammed with a performance program and the dealer won't do that.

If the engine is at redline or beyond in fourth gear or 5th gear while driving at 100mph you be have reached the actual top speed of your truck. Many trucks have low gearing making for a gear limted top speed of around 100 mph.

If you are on the gas at 100mph but not at redline and the engine seems to sputter then it is an electronic governor taht is controlled within the ECU. You will need either a chip (I have heard that Superchips.com has the best chips) or a reprogrammed ECU or piggyback ECU(You will have to search online for those) some local speed shops or mechanics with this knowledge may be able to do it for you.

I don't recommend that you attempt to do this, because you set yourself up for a major lawsuit in the event of a collision.
You can purchase tuners that will remove the REV limiter as well as the speed limiter.
They cost < $400.00 at most speed and custom web sites.
But be advised— when you do this, and if you are involved in a collision, regardless if you are at fault or not, a good civil lawyer can make a pretty good case against you for liability, because of the presumed willingness to defeat the manufacturer's design specs, safety concerns, and legal speed limits.
