Good question. We sometimes get the notion that World War I was a 'nice war'. In some ways it started out that way, but it doesn't take long for the very worst in human nature to come out in a time of war.

You could start with the Armenian genocide, something that still causes controversy to this day. One million men, women and children dead in what is now Turkey. The Germans watched this event with great interest (at the very least). See the links below.

The handling of the Easter Uprising in Dublin could be described as a human rights violation, in that the processes of law that resulted in the subsequent execution of participants could only be described as shoddy. See link below

On the battlefields the killing of prisoners of war has been occasionally documented (noting the difficulty in keeping prisoners safely in many instances). Also worth mentioning was the execution of deserters from all armies which included underage combatants, the use of mustard gas (which while not outlawed at the time was clearly seen as a war crime later), the use of aircraft (including Zeppelin airships) to bomb civilian areas, and the sinking of non-combatant ships under the 'unrestricted warfare' policy of the Germans (which resulted in the USA entering World War I).

Good luck with the project.

how about the french, executing there own soldiers for refusing to fight, shot were common soldiers no officers, using poison gas, why would countries have to have a meeting to outlaw gas, just by the name gas etc. should have made it a violation,, i knew one guy who had been gassed in ww1,and got a job as a caretaker at a cath church in chicago, but he's since passed
