They break up to try and regain a bit of the upper hand. The guilt of what they have done, if they have a heart, also will make them run, as they feel you deserve better. But those ones are rare. Usually it's the turning the tables theory,which is to find fault in others to cover up their own bad actions.
Also, remember, girls cheat too! Same reasons. Same tricks. Just more careful at it. Or used to be.

we're terrified of relationships, well 90% of us, and that's the healthy way to be, it just means that we screw up like a rabbit in the headlights. The remaining 10% are cocky and self-interested, and will cheat on you without caring... it's a loose-loose situation, the key is working out when it's out of idiocy or maliciousness...

i'm not a guy, but it's probalby because you allow yourself to be treated badly - stay away from the bad boys - don't allow them into your life - guys will only do things they know they can get away with.
