XBOX Live is free for a few months, if you have a trial card. Then there is a month-to-month subscription, but I'm not sure what that costs per/month.
I pay for Live on an annual basis, which is $50 every 12 months.

x-box live "silver" is free out of the box. X-box live "gold" requires a monthly or yearly fee.
The difference is that you have to have the gold membership to play with people online. Both levels can browse and download the online content and send messages to other x-box live users. Occassionaly gold members will get some exclusive content for free to download, but I've only seen that once.

All new 360's have 4 free 1month trials. Create a silver account and you will have the option to chose 1month gold free. After you use all the 1months you will have to purchase a subscription. It is only $50 annually which is a % of the console itself and it is worth it if you pwn like me XD!!

To go into more detail so you'll understand everything that's involved, the voice chat, messages back and forth and downloading offline demos are all free. To sign on to the xbox live online gaming service, you have to upgrade to xbox live gold. That is $50.00 for 12 months. Without gold you cannot play games online but you can do everything else.

you get the silver membership for free, which basically lets you post a profile and download games and videos that you pay for. the gold membership is $50.00 a year, and if you want to play your games online thats what you need. i have had it for almost 3 1/2 years, it is well worth 4 dollars per month.

Yeah, you have to pay £3.00 / month. The connection also requies Internet/phone line so you'll end up paying download as well.
Well worth if though- most games allow you to play against loads of other people on live!

Why do you've a Kratos photo from God of conflict on your icon..... (gasp) you traitor! You heard of the three earrings of lack of existence? no longer properly worth getting an xbox if its merely going to break on you, then you surely ought to deliver it in, then it is going to smash, then deliver it in, then smash.... properly to procure the photo.
