There could be several reasons why your knee is inflamed; arthritis, sprain, cartilage tear. At any rate, swelling indicates inflammation and a good home remedy is to take ginger root (the real root you can find at a grocery store. By the way while you are there, get some tofu, you'll need it later), grate it, place it in some cheesecloth and tie the top. This ball of grated ginger should be about the size of a baseball. Place the bag of ginger in 2 quarts of water and bring to a boil. Turn down the heat, let it simmer for 20 minutes. Squeeze out the bag of ginger, (careful it's hot!) then when you can stand to touch the water, put a washcloth in the ginger water. wring it out and place on your knee. When it begins to get cool, dip it in the ginger water again and place it back on the knee. After 20 minutes of this, (you are accelerating the blood flow to the area), you will then make a cold compress of the tofu. Remove the tofu from your refrigerator, crush 1/4 of the container of tofu and place in a large piece of cheesecloth (large enough to cover the area you just heated with the ginger water and washcloth), fold the cheesecloth over and close with a tie. You again have a bag, but a large one. Place over the knee for 20 minutes. This should help to get rid of the swelling that is causing the discomfort in the knee. Don't throw the water or tofu away. Return the bag of tofu to the fridge and cover the ginger water. They can both be reused several times before you need to purchase new ones. Do this about 4 times a day for a few days, or until you achieve the desired results. Staying away from hard salt (sea salt is okay but in small increments), beer, alcoholic beverages of any kind actually, and red meat will also help your knee. Toxins from these foods and beverages settle in your knee area. Hope you feel better.

Time to see a good doctor. You clearly are not suffering from a simple sprain. Something else is going on.

Best wishes and good luck.
