I'm actually attending an on-line school for interior design, Art Institute (http://www.thecampuscommon.com/aio/campus/), and I'm working on a Bachelor's of Science/Fine Arts. It is pricey but most art schools are. And this doesn't include the supplies.

I was given the first lesson to distinguish the difference between an Interior Designer and an Interior Decorator. A designer needs a four year degree and certification in the state that they will be practicing. It is also recommended to get involved in organizations like ASID (www.asid.org) to get connections with local businesses. The salary rates vary between states. Check out this website to get an idea: http://www.salary.com/personal/layoutscripts/psnl_default.asp
Now, an interior decorator is for anyone interested in decorating in general. They can't however, manipulate anything that involves construction. They need to go to school for these skills. They can paint, reupholster furniture, apply laminate floors, plaster walls, and slap wallpaper and these can all be learned from a local Home Depot. I'm positive there are some courses you can take at a community college for some additional help. As far as the business goes for interior decorators, it is entirely up to you and how you want to run it.

I hope this helps.

The pay depends on what you charge. No, you do not need a degree, just good ideas. Interior designers love their job!! :)
