In most cases they keep them indefinitely--essentially forever. As long as your school is still in existence and there hasn't been a disaster that might have destroyed things, a transcript is probably on file. It's fairly common for people to request old transcripts. The school I work at has two or three requests a year for transcripts from the '60s or '70s, and we have them on file for every graduating class that has ever gone through the school. We are in the process of destroying old paper copies and keeping electronic images instead, but the document is still available on request.

well a few years ago i went to my uncles high school to get his transcript and they had it but kept at another place and he graduated 20+ years ago. So you just need to stop at the school and ask and they can tell you where they keep the records.
