This Craftsman garage door opener is about 6-7 years old. Recently, the wall mount unit (that opens the garage door from inside the garage) stopped working, and the little green light on the gray button that opens the door went from a solid green light to a flashing green light. The remote control openers still work and the keypad unit just outside the garage still works. No one seems to have an answer to this problem, and I would hate to pay Sears the ridiculous service repair fee to fix what may be an easy problem. Does anyone out there have any suggestions? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

You are right about the charges that Sears will charge. It is $65 just to knock on your door. I believe your problem is with the wall mount unit. They have a circuit board in them that can go bad. To verify this, I suggest calling Chamberlain. This is who makes them for Sears. I don't have a number for them, but with a little research on the web, I am sure that you can find it.

Does it sound like the motor is turning? Just not turning the chain? Disconnect power. Open cover on unit. Look at the drive gears. They are plastic. these may strip with age or heavy use. IF so, you can order a rebuild kit online rather than buying a new unit. If you've got somebody handy with a screwdriver, they can replace the gears in an hour or so....much cheaper than buying and installing a whole new unit. I forget where I got my rebuild kit, but apparently there are really only a few types of garage door openers and companies just stick their labels on the outside. Just search on google. You'll find a kit that will have parts for nearly any opener and cost less than 20 bucks. Oh, and if it is the gears, you'll probably find some plastic dust right away once you open the cover. I remembered the fussiest part of swapping the gears was popping out a roll pin that held one gear in place. a vice or multiple hands would have been useful.

That has happened with mine. I didn't find a fix for it- I just bought a new one- they stock them at Sears. It ticked me off but it was easier and cheaper than having a tech charge me for a service call and then install a new one.

They are simple and straight forward to wire.

The flashing light would indicate it is in "lock" mode, but if this were the case the other openers wouldn't operate it either.

Unplug the operator and remove the switch from the wall. Disconnect the switch from the wires, plug the operator back in and then touch the wires together to see if the door will function if it does not you need to change the wires to the operator. If the door does function the switch is bad. Go to your local hardware store and buy a door bell button. Wire the button back in and try it.

If the opener has a safety light beam across the bottom of the door, make sure it is aligned, and not blocked.
