Limb lengthening is a serious surgical procedure. It is usually performed when there is a congenital short limb, gross deformity (genu valgum -knock knee- or genu varum -bow leg-), or non-union of a fracture. Cosmetic limb lengthening should be avoided due to the possible complications of the procedure.

If you are considering limb lengthening you should do your homework. And I don't mean by going on WebMD. You need to read research articles from medical journals. You also should research surgeons who perform this procedure to ensure the likelihood of a positive outcome.

There are different techniques and approaches to limb lengthening.

Immediate lengthening is performed for a short length increase by cutting and sliding the bone to lengthen it and then held in place by internal screws and plates.

Gradual lengthening is performed for a longer duration for a greater adjustment in length. The bone is fractured and then "set" by an external fixation device. The device provides a distraction tension to the bone when the patient turns pins on the fixator several times a day. This tension stimulates bone growth. This procedure allows about 1mm growth a day and takes several months.

Possible complications of this procedure:
Infections of the skin, muscle, or bone.
Vascular or nerve damage.
Common post-surgical risks: DVT, pneumonia, cardiac arrest.
Premature or delayed union or malunion.
Fracture.
Contracture.

A few years ago, I read an article about women in China who underwent that procedure. The bone beneath your knee is cut and your legs are put in these braces. The bone regnerates and that's how legs can be surgically elongated. I've read its painful.
