I don't get it either. I guess it is just a matter of opinion.

Does it really not help a bit? It has helped me. My child due in a few weeks is nameless and I'm always open to suggestions. Maybe someone can suggest a name I haven't thought of. That is why I ask others for names.
Btw, Pia is a Hindu/Indian name meaning "love" :)

Some people can not think of a name. There are so many names out there. Sometimes some one comes up with something you did not consider. This is a good format, because the people you ask you do not know. People here gives a lot of strange and good names. When people ask what you like of a name, and I do not like them, I do not respond only if they state they are not pregnant

I agree Pia is a horrible name and as for the question some people just like others opinions. Just like you asking a question you want feedback, am i right? Or you wouldnt be asking a question.

human relationships are based on taking advice and learning from other people's experience.sometimes it's better to hear judgments from people you DON'T know. for instance, if you and your partner like the name pia for your kid, and everyone you know says it's a great idea although they hate the name.wouldn't you want someone-even if you don't know them- to tell you that it's bad. i mean any name that you and youre partner like shouldn't be neccesarily the sweetest. it might have a bad impact on the kid himself.like being teased about it at school.so,you should hear the opinions of alot of different people before you make the most important decision in your kid's life, one that would stick to him for the rest of his life.(movie example i came up with: in the movie meet the parents, the hero's actual name was gaylord focker_gay fock_ and he had everyone call him greg to avoid the embarrasment)

I suppose people are looking for suggestions really, something different from the ones they can think of, I know that when people ask me what i like I can only ever think of about 3 or 4 names I like, so to have some more suggestions is good. Perhaps someone may suggest something you would not have thought of originally.

I like to ask people's opinions on names because sometimes they have good ideas for what flows well together. Also, sometimes others help me to see something I like or dislike about a name.
I want a name that most* people will enjoy hearing, and not something that is going to get a lot of slack for, so therefor, I ask others for their opinions.

I think they may just be looking to see what the general public will think about it. I don't have any kids either but I think when I do I will keep my baby's name a secret until birth. I know someone who struggled finding a name for her baby because too many hands in the pot. So she told me "Sheila, when you have your baby, don't ask anyone for their opinions. "
Pia is ugly!

This is a good forum to get ideas and try names out with no obligations attached . . . much unlike hitting up family and friends for opinions. Sometimes you find out things about names you never thought of before - like I found out Penelope is a common name for Spanish prostitutes(!).
Sometimes respondants will build off your ideas and give you new names to try that are actually appealling, too. It's fun!

There is nothing wrong with asking other people, by asking them, does not mean you going to use the name that they come up with, its just that you might hear of a name that you really like and might consider using it

You are sad. Why do you care why people ask other people opinions about names? Really... does it hurt you in any way. Is it causing you emtional trauma to hear people asking suggestions for name? Let people live & be free. Stop judging. I bet your name is something "normal" like all the other Marys Susans, Jessicas, Jennifers of this world....boring.
