Abuse of trust is the terminology used when a person is placed in a position where he should be acting properly and responsibly with the things placed in his charge and he takes advantage of the situation to cheat his employer. If an accountant uses his position to cheat his employer, then the offence is viewed extremely seriously, as it is both theft and an abuse of trust.

Breach of confidence is the term used to describe a disloyal betrayal of something told to an individual who for professional reasons was under a duty to keep that information secret. For example, lawyers representing a person in a court of law are not allowed to talk to journalists about the case or about what their clients have told them in giving instructions and to do so would be a breach of confidence.
