Well, this answer really depends on a lot of other factors.
You'll really need to know the answer to all of these before you can get an IP to plug in and have it "work".
1. What type of network are you on? Meaning, is this computer at work? Home? School?
Note: If it's any other network other than one at home, the network IPs are most likely configured and assigned by an administrator. In which case, they're most likely using a DHCP server. A DHCP server assigns your computer an IP address automatically. I won't get further into, as thats about as much as you need to know for now. If its getting a DHCP address, you will need to go back into your network card's properties, click on TCP/IP, choose properties, and click on the radio button that reads: Obtain an IP address automatically, then click OK (assuming you're running Windows XP)
2. Do you have an Internet Connection? Is it an through an Office LAN? School's Campus LAN? Cable, or DSL modem?
Note: Again, if it's anything other than your own home network, you'll need to speak to your school's or your office's IT Department and have this setup.
However, if this is a home network, I would try the following IPs:
192.168.1.1 through 192.168.1.10 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
This is just a very general range of the Class C private network, in order for this to work, the assumption is that you're using a home based router (like a Linksys, Dlink, 3Com, etc), and you've already assigned your router an IP address (which you will use as the default gateway on your computer). Otherwise, you will need to contact your ISP and get the correct settings for their network.
I hope this helps, but really, you'll have to know the answer to the questions above before somebody can really help you. Good Luck!

to many variable..
are you at a work place? home? a friends house? an internet cafe? a coffeeshop?
Usually the internet address would be dished out by whats called a DHCP server/service. so the internet connection will give your computer an IP address automatically so you can access the internet.
Of course in the internet options you need to set the settings back to automaticy detect.

- Automactically detect...
- Use automatic conf...
- use a proxy...
let ur router (DHCP) handle ur ip address, unless ur running a web server or in need of a *static* ip. Usually the DHCP server will give u one.

If you're on a work or school network, your systems admin will tell you what to use. If you're at home, leave it blank.
