Some people have a need to believe that there's something more after death. For other people, they might have experienced something that can't be explained by logic, so they look for other ways to explain it.

According to a leading statistics firm,* 32% of Americans believe in ghosts.

It seems to me that there might be multiple reasons for people believing in ghosts.

One is some sort of desire to believe in ghosts, created by the loss of a loved one, whom the surviving people want to continue existing in some tangible way. They want the departed loved-one to stay close by, so they want the person to remain on earth as a ghost. Though not rational, this may be one reason some people believe in ghosts, just due to their inability to accept the loss of a loved-one.

Another reason might just be peer pressure, if 1 out of 3 Americans really believe it, why shouldn't I? Again, not rational, but probably a reason for some people who believe.

Another reason might be a desire for fear, the rush of seeing or experiencing something creepy.

Another might be the attention it brings them to talk about their stories, or the stories of others.

Finally, some people may actually feel they have experienced something paranormal. Whether this is brought on by one of the other, or some not-listed, psychological or sociological phenomenon, or it is an actual experience... I don't know.

I believe in 'ghosts' because I've actually experienced 'ghostly things' ... but I don't think that means that EVERYONE can or should 'believe' in ghosts, either. Some 'do' and some 'don't' and that's what makes this a wonderful place to live ... the FREEDOM TO CHOOSE on our own.

It is human nature to make up reasons for the enexplianed. Life after death is a huge unexplained thing. no one really knows the truth because there is no one who has really done it. People believe in ghosts because they do not want to believe that death is the end of all existence.

Your question (I assume) pre-supposes the fact that there are no ghosts. People believe in ghosts because:
a) ghosts exists
b) believers are lying
c) believers are hallucinating.

The master, Hseuh-feng, asked a newly arrived monk where he had come from. The monk answered: "From the Monastery of Spiritual Light."
The master said, "In the daytime we have sunlight; in the evening, lamplight. What is spiritual light?"
The monk had no answer.
The Master said, "Sunlight. Lamplight."
