Make sure of the following things:

1-The remote computer has remote desktop (or terminal services) enabled. This generally means running Windows 2000, Windows XP or later and turning Remote Desktop on.

2-The port (by default 3389) has to be accessible. If the machine is behind a firewall/NAT router (e.g., cable or dsl router) then the port will have to be manually opened. Most cable/dsl routers have a built in web page that you can use to open up a port. You'll also need to open up port 3389 in Windows Firewall.

3-The user you're trying to logon as has to be allowed to logon to remote desktop.

One way to turn on Remote Desktop on Windows XP is to right click My Computer then click Properties, change to the Remote tab and make sure the "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer" checkbox is checked. To allow an account to use it use the "Select Remote Users" button.

The only computers that can run the remote desktop host are computers running XP Pro and Servers like Windows 2003.

For XP Pro do this:
To turn it on, right click on MyComputer. Select properties. Goto the Remote tab. Checkmark Allow users to remotely connect to this computer.

After it is turned on, go to another computer that has the Remote Desktop client and log on.

XP Home and XP Media you are out of luck for hosting. You can only be a client with those. You can use a utility called TightVNC though.
