I don't have insurance at the moment (Damn company is keeping me waiting on their card to come in the mail) but unfortunately I'm sick. I have to go visit my pediatrician from years past. How much should I expect to pay for him to diagnose something like strep throat?

I'm not sure exactly, but it's too much. It's a shame that they charge people who don't have insurance so much more than they charge the insurance companies. If you are just waiting for a card, why can't you just have them verify your coverage by calling your insurance company? Why should you lay out the money? If you're waiting for a card, you're still covered. If you don't have insurance perhaps you can get some from your state government. I know that in NY there is a thing called Child Health Plus, established by Bill Clinton. It's health insurance for minors whose parents don't have health insurance and aren't covered by Medicare. You should look into this if you need it. Too many people who really need these benefits miss out on them because they're not well advertised. You have to seek them out. Hope that you feel better soon.

If you are a new patient the visit can but up to $200 depending on the area and you will have the extra cost of the strep test which is about $30. Before scheduling your appointment ask if they give discounts to private pay patients. Many offices are now.

If you are an adult you shouldn't be seeing a pediatrician as they specilze in children's medicine. You need to see either a Family practitioner or a general practicioner. I doubt the peditrician would even see you based on the fact you are an adult, however you might get a recommendation from him. How much they cost depends on alot of things, geogrpahical area, etc. You can expect to spend at the very least $100.00.

If you are covered but just don't have the card call the company or the human resources department where the insurance is through and ask them for your numbers. When you get to the clinic just give them this info.

If your company is making you wait for your card, to get insurance something is wrong. Call HR and get your group and ID number, give those to the doctor's office. If you don't have insurance yet, I would suggest you go to a local clinic.

Good Luck!

The prices are so high that not many people can afford to go.
