in back in the furture part 3 how did doc live in 1955 if he had died in 1885 ?

Because the Doc that was in 1885 was originally from 1985, so the 1955 Doc (who Marty took the letter to) hadn't caught up to that point yet. He hadn't even invented the time machine at that point.

i don't believe my mind is so full of worthless knowledge but I think the answer was that Nov 19th 1955 was the joining of all of the different time lines that existed. If you remember in part II they went into the future and old Biff stole the sports book and went back and gave it to young Biff that created a whole new time line that had Doc Brown in an asylum and Marty's mom married to Biff and the whole Biff world thing. Thats why they had to go back to 1955 to fix the time line because it began there and couldn't be fixed in the future conversly the same time line had the 1955 version of Doc Brown there before he went back to the old west and was shot and a third and different time line was created. So its like three different time lines but they all intersect on Nov 19th 1955 but traveling on any of them brings you to a different place
