we just had a weekend in london used www.hotelclub.co.uk a lot cheaper than lastminute, book as late as possible the rates come down, our weekend was in a 4* hotel including breakfast for 156 for the 2 of us, lesser hotels obviously a lot cheaper but weekdays in london tend to cost more so if u going for a week suggest u do a mid week to mid week break so u get the whole weekend at the cheap rates when the business men are no longer around, just had a look and u can get next week in 3* twin room with continental breakfast for 216, would suggest u only book the instant confirmation hotels and for info u only pay a deposit when u book paying the rest to the hotel when u get there

Dukedrink is correct, regarding the Victoria/Belgrave area.
It's in between both the rail and coach station and is very central.
There are many cheap and cheerful hotels around here, I work around this area and can vouch for cleaniness and value for money.
Because there are so many hotels within a small area, you could easily look round and sus out your hotel of choice, there will be no need to book at this time of year but obviously come spring it would be recommended.
Check these two out for starters.

i stay in a house here now, but when I was visiting london on a tight budget I stayed in a place called the "generator hostel" it was incredibly cheap ! 3 of us in a room to ourselves, and although it's a hostel, it was GREAT nights, cheap bar, entertainment, REALLY friendly people. Back then I was an all black wearing heavy metal fan with long long hair, and people were all friendly and I had a great stay. I couldn't recommend it more, but check it out yourself to make sure it's something you'd be comfortable with,

There are so many hotels but i would look at the bed and breakfast market to get some good deals. A good area is either Victoria or Belgravia. There are some good ones on Ebury Street. Also try http://www.londonvacationguide.com as a good resource and get some excellent deals via their online booking portal. Good Luck!

Easyhotels do a room in central london for £30/night. Or you could try a hostel, like the one below (£10 for a dorm bed, you can stay in ladies only dorms or get a private room)

there is a youth hostel in new cross, which is a fab area for getting boozed up locally and has good transport links to the city. i did stay in regents hotel (right on Piccadilly circus)a few years ago which was known (prop. still is)to be cheep and not minding visitors in the room, well or not noticing...we stayed with five people in a twin bedroom. enjoy the city!
