You can only reset the check engine light, by hooking up an OBDII code reader and erasing the code from your computer... but the light will just come right back on. You need to read the code and then replace the bad part that is causing the code, the light came on for a reason.

Normally you can take the negative cable off the battery for approx. 10 minutes on 1995 and older. But the 1996 and above use the OBDII systems now and the ecm will hold that code in the brain until it is cleared professionally. They will normally do it for free. Takes about 30 seconds.

You will require what's called a actron engine diagnostics tool for around 149.00 @ autozone or other auto stores, First fix the problem which might very well be an oxygen sensor, then click delete.. this device will however tell you what is wrong.

unhook the wire from the catalitic converter wait 30 seconds then hook it back up.
