If I turn like 10 tvs to one show, does that count as 10 viewers? Or is it based on what the cable company reports?

It is all based on Neilson families. They have a box in their home that keeps track of what TV shows they watch. That is how it use to be done, not everyone has cable.

The A C Nielson Company has "test" families they have recruited using criteria which give a representative cross section of the viewing public.

They utilize both electronic monitoring & a diary maintained by those included in theor sample group.
