It means that you are beautiful because of what you do, not how you look. That beauty is on the inside, in how you treat others and face the world.

The second one means that if you keep your head up, even the worst things won't stop you from living your life and picking yourself back up.

"Handsome is what handsome does"- all that means is looks are only good for looking. They do nothing to help pay the bills (unless your a model) feed and clothe the kids, and have nothing to do with how compatible two people are.
As for the other one, I don't know. You might try looking it up on wikipedia though.

Physical beauty isn't important; good behavior is - it's a bit like saying you're beautiful on the outside if you're beautiful on the inside.
