I can't speak for all women but I can tell you I, myself, would rather have a smaller quality stone rather than a larger crappy stone.
First of all, she's lucky she's getting a ring at all. LOL.
Secondly, and more seriously, a great quality stone is much more valuable than a bigger stone, hands down. It will be absolutely stunning in the light and because of that, the size will not even matter. Seriously.
Another good reason to get quality over size....if you decide you want to upgrade or change to a different size or color stone in the future, a quality diamond will sell or trade very well. I just had a jeweler tell me last week he has no use for the stone in my old engagement ring because it's not a "quality" stone they would be able to resell.
White gold is a good alternative to platinum. Platinum is just sooo expensive, it's tough to take that step. Again, maybe one day if you decide to upgrade, you can do platinum. Let me warn you though, and don't freak out because this is normal: the rhodium plating on the white gold will wear away over time. When will depend on the ph and acidity in your girlfriends skin. Mine had to be done every 4-6 months. Some people, again, depending on her body chemistry and how she wears it. You will have to have it re-coated but that is normal. Kay should have included something like this along with their "checkup" plan they probably gave you. It should be a minimal or no charge.
It sounds like you did really well. Now don't ruin it by doing something sappy like put it in her Champagne glass or have the waiter bring it out on her dessert plate on Valentine's day. Good luck and congrats on your engagement.
PS - make sure you are positive she's going to say yes if you're going to propose to her in public or you may embarrassed.

The ring you picked sounds fantastic. Any woman should be satisfied to receive this ring! If not...I would be VERY wary of her from that point on. ALWAYS go for quality over quantity when it comes to a diamond. Don't worry about the white gold...if you have the $$$ down the road and even care about upgrading, do it then. I have white gold jewelry and love it. No it is not as hard as platinum and it can nick easier, but white gold keeps it's shine much longer than platinum and it looks very pretty.
My diamond is just under a carat and I absolutely love it. It is the ring my husband asked me to marry him with and I wouldn't trade it for the world. He too also wanted to get me a "bigger" diamond and I could care less about the size. Besides I'd rather spend the $$$ on something like our house or a vacation.
Remember, that giving an engagement ring is a total marketing scheme by the diamond companies...this was not always a "practice" so to speak. (Most older folks in their 70's to 90's only wear a plain gold band...it wasn't until many years later that this "fad" became a common practice)
I think you totally made the correct choice.

Size is important only to the extent that it fits the girl's hand and lifestyle. I chose a smaller diamond - half carat - because I'm active (and still like to get my hands in the pockets of tight jeans). Some girls like BIG diamonds because they think it defines status. Personally, I would rather spend my life looking at a diamond with good clarity and cut in a nice setting, rather than something big that looks like costume jewelry. The LEO diamonds have spectacular color reflections under any and all light. You spent your money wisely!! It sounds like a beautiful ring - happy engagement!

QUALITY for sure!!!! if not, you just have a really big, ugly diamond, i know what ring you speak of and would love to have it as a gift!!!! also, kay's also has the "perfect" diamond collection you might want to check out in the future. they are small, like .1 or even 3-.5 diamonds, but they are colorless and internally flawless, perfect. sure they're small, but man do they sparkle!! i have 2 and love 'em!! your lady will be pleased!! good job!
ps--don't sell yourself short that the center diamond is "only" a half carat...that's more than most people have!!!

Try going to Google and find out about Moissanite before you invest in a diamond. The research shows that you can get a 2 ct. Moissanite Jewel (which looks JUST like a diamond) it's flawless, and just a beautiful as a diamond, for around $700-800. You get more bang for your buck, and unless your girl asks, she'll NEVER know the difference. (Now, I'm not encouraging lying, but to give an example) Moissanite is a lab created jewel, it's more resistant than CZ, and more cost effective. One ring that I told my boyfriend about it almost 2ct. and it costs $600 some odd dollars. Sorry this answer isn't giving the exact info. you wanted, but I thought that I might be able to save you a few bucks. Look for yourself on Google, eBay, etc.etc.
Hope this helps
Good luck ^_^

It all depends on what one is looking for. If it is a matter of the size only then that would be an important factor. If it is a matter of high quality then yes, that would definitely be more of a deciding factor (it also depends if you want to resell the diamond in the future).

Personally, I was happy to get any diamond at all let alone a big one or a clear one..etc..
It's not the size of the ring, or the expense.. it's what the ring represents. Some people just don't have the money for something big and fancy..
SO.. unless the woman you're going to propose too is a superficial money grubber.. you've picked a fantastic ring that any woman would be proud to have on her finger.. but just to let you know.. it's not how expensive or big it is.. it's just that she's getting a ring at all that's going to make her happy.

The quality of the diamond is more appealing and worthwhile. A big diamond just looks gaudy and over the top. I know I like a subtle but beautiful look with quality parts. You did well by my book.

It depends on the woman. Some are only happy with the best, most expensive diamond and others are happy with whatever their love can afford and for him to not go into debt for a ring. My ring cost $99 16 yrs. ago and we're still married, because it wasn't about the ring. I know some couples who spent thousands on a ring and aren't married anymore!! The ring doesn't matter!!!

I'd rather take a vacation than have a diamond. I'd rather have a pumpin audio system put into my car than a diamond. Does she WANT a diamond? That is the important part.
