Well, there are a lot of scams out there. Most real jobs at home you have to spend some kind of money to get started...I would first make a list of your interests/hobbies. Then, determine what you wouldn't mind doing for a living. Some legitimate ideas from working at home that may cost you but would be worth your money:
(I didn't look if you were a male/female, so this is general)
Photography, seamstress, wedding planner, event planner, wood working, something like Mary Kay or Tupperware, web designer, graphic designer, interior decorator (anyone can be a decorator, but you have to have a degree to be called a designer), freelance work, organization business, professional dog walking service....this is just a start to a list of ideas. Now go create your own based on YOUR hobbies! Good Luck!

Just remember, even though you work at home & you are your own boss, you still need to set hours and work like it's a job. If you don't work, you don't get paid. Got it? :)

Are you talking about owning your own business and not working for someone else?

Even if you don't have to spend money up front and it's a legitimate turn key company, you will have to invest in your business anyway, because if there is no one to promote it to... You are out of business.

I wish people would get a grip on that.

Most importantly of all, do you have a written business plan? You cannot start any business without design and planning, if you go into it blindly because it sounds good, you are wasting precious time and money.

Also, if you design web sites, become a flash animator or something that requires a skill, you are what is known as an independent contractor, which is what I am. I work as a stunt/actress around my home biz and family... You still have to
invest in your business to promote it.

There is no getting money without investing in promoting your business.

I have found several legitimate work at home sites so far, and one of them made me $494+ in October, $700+ in November, and $838.57 in December. They are free to join.

Please click my screen name or avatar for more information and a link for proof of payment and lots of specific details.

I made some nice money at first, but once I found out these sites were legitimate, I started adding referrals and the money got a lot better. For every person you refer, you get 20% of what they earn on 2 of these sites. And for every person that one of your referrals refer, you get 10% on one site and 5% on the other. In time--this could be a great source of income--making money while other people are in a sense, working for you.

If you get 5 referrals who earn $20 a month, that is an extra $20 in your pocket. If you get 100 referrals earning $20 a month, that is an extra $400 you'll earn every month!!!

And by the way--never join a work at home program that wants you to pay up front. If they were making that much money, they wouldn't need to charge you.

Note: There are a lot of other sites listed too as well as the payout for each.

I work from home with a company that manufactures products that we’re already buying elsewhere, but they are better, safer & healthier. We just help set up customer accounts and the company pays us to do so. We set our own hours and work as little or as long as we want. It is a wonderful opportunity and has really benefited our family. You are welcome to email me for more information.

Yes, and I will stick with it forever. I've been through several companies to find this one. I don't stock or deliver products. See my profile since yahoo doesn't like for us to relay links. Good Luck!

Telephone marketing (arranging appointments for sales reps or getting contacts for sales). It is easy to set-up and run. You just need to sell the/your service to companies to get started. Get paid either by hour or per appointment. Another option is to do database cleansing - confirming contact numbers and addresses.
