The heat in my 99 Millenia usually warms up fast but lately I start my car, the engine warms up and the needle in the temperature gauge shoots all the way up to HOT (it has always maintained exactly between H and C), and the heat never really gets hot... WHAT MIGHT THIS BE???

Sounds like the thermostat is stuck shut. The thermostat keeps the coolant inside the engine until it is warm enough and then it opens to cycle it with the radiator, this allows the engine to warm up quickly. If it's stuck closed the coolant in the engine will continue to circulate only in the engine and never cool the engine. It also means that the heater will never get any warm coolant so your heater won't work either.

It's about a $5 part, you can fix it yourself but you have to drain the coolant so if you don't have the facilities to do that then take it into a shop. It shouldn't cost you more than $100 including parts and labor.

One other, if you had the coolant changed recently they may not have done it correctly and you could have an airpocket stuck in your cooling system which will prevent the water pump from circulating the coolant. If not, it's most likely the thermostat.

And... Don't drive it anymore. If you're more than about a block from your nearest auto shop get it towed there, you don't want a $5 part to cost you a $5000 engine.

Def. the Thermostat. It's very easy to install. Just Follow the hose coming from the radiator and take that thing off(the cover).Inside you'll find a metal thing that looks like a dradle. That is the thermostat. Order a new thermostat for $10, put it in, put the cover on and connect the hose. Wow your done. any questions email me jh_686@yahoo.com

Replace the thermostat. Your thermostat is frozen (broke and stuck) in the closed position. Since the heater gets it's heat from the engine, this is why the heat is so high. Replace the thermostat asap!
