Why do most colleges have off for Martin Luther King day but not Presidents day??

is it just me or does something seem wrong with that?

Interesting question. I never noticed that before.

Presidents' Day (United States) Observance and traditions:
Until the late 1980s, corporate businesses were universally closed on this day, the way they are on (for example) Memorial Day or Christmas Day. With the late 1980s advertising push to rename the holiday, more and more businesses are staying open on the holiday each year, and, as on Veterans Day and Columbus Day, most delivery services outside of the Post Office now offer regular service on the day as well. Some public transit systems have also gone to regular schedules on the day. Various theories exist for this, one accepted reason being to make up for the growing trend of corporations to close in observance of the Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. However, when reviewing the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill debate of 1968 in the Congressional Record, one notes that supporters of the Bill were intent on moving federal holidays to Mondays to promote business. Over time, as with many federal holidays, few Americans actually celebrate Presidents' Day, and it is mainly known as a day off from work or school.

Personally I disagree with you. More schools and businesses give of Presidents day. I am sick of commercials giving deals for cars on presidents day. Every department store has a sale for presidents day. It's always a 3 day weekend and people I know always make plans to go away, it's a big holiday, we are celebrating very important presidents who setteled our country. As far as MLKing there is some mention of the day and it depends on where you are as to if you get the day off or not. I certainly got the day off in college, as I went to Boston University, which is where he went to school and left all his papers. Also, in NYC, the day is honored as there are so many black people and it is only fair to them that the day be seen as a holiday. I can't say what other places in the country do, if they close down or not. I have heard in a lot of places that if you are black or feel strongly about the situation, you can have the day off, and not count it as a vacation day. It's like in an institution that isn't closed for the Jewish Holidays, needless to say the Jews take the days off without any problems.
