It was Vera Lynn!! The song might have been that Auf Wiederseh'n Sweetheart Petula was the first UK woman to win a Grammy with that song I think!

I want to say there was, but for the life of me can't remember who - it may have been before the rock era the site mentions. However, it is not 100% correct - nor is it wrong. A female duo from England, the Caravelles, had a hit with "You Don't Have To Be A Baby To Cry" on Smash Records in the early 1960's. So, she may have been the first SOLO female artist from England to do it. Not too sure if the Caravelles went to Number One or not, but as much airplay as it got, it had to be close.

Thank you Adrian, that's who I was trying to think of but that was pre-1955.

I've searched all over and can't find anyone else. However The Caravelles with 'You Don't have to be a Baby to Cry' was a chart success in 1963 but not No 1. They were a duo however and also charted as backing singers on 4 US singles.

Susan Boyle, little question. Her age or seems don't matter. She's controlled to wheedle her way into thousands and thousands of hearts regardless of all that. as properly seems are not each and everything and there are some distance older woman obtainable with astounding voices. hint hint: Elaine Paige. Boyle's voice is astounding and because your asking approximately making a music, she's the terrific and there is not any longer a doubt in my ideas that she'll be staying with us for somewhat it sluggish.
