Cleaning staff, especially in schools and other insitutions with hard floors, spread what's called "green dust" on the floor and it seems to help clean. What is "green dust" made from and how does it work?

Not sure but I think it is made from the stuff Kitty litter is made from, only finer. they use kitty litter to absorb oil spills and it does a great job. maybe they recycle that as it works as a dust magnet. just a theory.

This is also called "Sweeping Compound". It is made up of, basically, saw dust with added chemicals to attract dust and dirt.
Spread it around on the floor and sweep it up.
