I'm doing a project and I looked him up on Wikipedia. It says he created the video game and all that, but it's saying someone else wrote the book. It also says the name isn't really the author's, can anyone clear this up, please?

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell is a 2004 novel told in the first person by author David Michaels. The novel is based on the video game series Splinter Cell created by author Tom Clancy. The series chronicles the adventures and the stealth actions of the fictional character Sam Fisher.

After the book was published in 2004, Raymond Benson announced that he had written it, using the pseudonym David Michaels. Benson is best known for being the official author of the James Bond series of novels from 1997 to 2002. In 2005, a second book by Benson was released entitled Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Operation Barracuda. In 2006, a third book entitled "Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Checkmate" was released. The pseudonym David Michaels is again used, but Raymond Benson is not the author. It is currently unknown who authored the third novel released in November 2006.

Play as Sam Fisher, a highly skilled Special Forces operative and fight a corrupt secret agency to get your daughter back. Follow a trail of intrigue that leads from Iraq to a high-security building in Washington. Run, jump, fight, and shoot using a handgun, shotgun, AK47 and bazooka, or maintain stealth by improvising with nearby objects. You are now a renegade spy agent; you don't follow any orders except for your own rules of engagement! Hitgameszone.blogspot.com

It's basically a marketing gimmick. Clancy allows the publisher to use his name(he most likely came up with the basic idea of the book/books but didn't want to bother writing them). and collects a commission off of the sales. I do think the first book came out before the game, though I'm not sure if the game was designed after the book's success or as part of the marketing. So, Clancy uses his name to push sales and other authors get to make some money writing them. I've only read the first book, and it's very obvious it's not written by Clancy.

The first two were written by Raymond Benson, under the pseudonym of David Michaels. It's not known who wrote the third one. Tom Clancy approved the series, that's all, and made sure that the technology and events in them were as realistic as possible.
