As all of the above have answered, yes, Subaru is a Japanese car. My Outback has a sticker on the side window, however, that tells us that the car was assembled in Indiana, USA. This gives you the idea that maybe it's actually made here, like some Honda's and Toyota's. However... There was a small piece of paper - probaby only 2"x4" - buried among the other things in the (VERY NICE) leather folder that holds the owner's manual. it reads (more or less):
Engine and drivetrain: Made in Japan
Body: Made in Japan
Assembled in Indiana
There is a quota for the number of cars that can be imported for Japan to the USA, however it seems that there is NO quota on the number of car PARTS that are imported. Subaru (like others) must be importing these "car parts" and doing the final assembly of the automobiles in the USA to get around the import restrictions.
I admit that this is speculation on my part as far as Subaru is concerned, but I know that other companies have done the same thing and it looks like maybe Subaru has doneit also. Whatever, I am glad they figured out how to get their cars in the country, because I love my Outback.

Yes definately!
Subaru started out as "The Aircraft Research Laboratory" in 1917 headed by Chikuhei Nakajima. Then in 1931, the company was reorganized as "Nakajima Aircraft Co., Ltd", the main airplane manufacturer for Japan in WWII.
Subaru (In katakana: ã¹ãã«), a Japanese car company, is the automotive division of Fuji Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (FHI).
"Subaru" is the Japanese word for the star cluster Pleiades that is depicted in the company logo. The Pleiades (also known as the Seven Sisters) has only six stars easily visible to the naked eye. Subaru's logo of six stars represents the five companies that came together after World War II to form one large company. While smaller than many of its competitors, Subaru has been a highly profitable company for many years. It is noted for the production of conventional-bodied cars with full-time AWD (in fact, in many markets its entire product range has this feature) and its use of boxer engines.
Tada....they make great cars especially subaru impreza rally cars!
