I went on an interview today and one of the first things he asked was if I was married. I didnt think much of the question but when I got home and told my fiance that he asked that my fiance said that is very inappropriate to ask in an interview and they should never ask that question. What do you think, inappropriate or is my fiance just being jealous?

it's not inappropriate, employers have to know all things about you before hiring you

If you are in the United States, that interview question was not only inappropriate, but illegal. If you don't get the job, consider filing an action against that company. It would be difficult to prove in court, but you could probably beat a few bucks out of the company assuming they don't want to go to trial.

you're their corporation at the same time as they're thinking hiring you. There are literally unlawful questions yet i do no longer imagine any of those qualify. they're meant to be asking you about the pastime you're being employed for therefore i wager i'd question why they're asking you the question. perhaps somebody else can shed some mild on how an corporation can legally ask those questions interior the first position... i'm no longer too attentive to the regulation. They sound like ice-breaker inquiries to me. what type of automobile you force, who you stay with... look like questions an corporation would ask in case you've been to be travelling. you actually do not want to employ someone who lives with their fiance and drives a 20 12 months previous vehicle for a job that is going to have them on the line and out of city 0.5 the time. i have been requested the "the position else" question some cases previously too. I accept as true with you thoroughly there, it particularly is uncomfortable. i'm wanting to work out what different solutions you get.

Nope, it's inappropriate. They're not supposed to ask personal questions like that. Because now if they don't hire you, how can you be sure it's not because you're married? I've had many employers ask if I have any kids. Some companies don't want to hire people with spouses or children b/c that means they're not AS focused on work. However, some companies prefer somebody who is family oriented. Who really knows?

Asking if you are married is like asking what religion you are. It holds no bearing whatsoever on what type of job you can do. Generally, interviewers can get around this by asking if you have a problem working late hours every once in a while because your husband/children will naturally work their way into the conversation on your comment.
Just like a conversation like this wouldn't be illegal: if you saw a picture of him and his family and asked "why is your son's name" and the matter turned personal on your comment and her responded "do you have children?" then it isn't illegal...it is just an informal interview.

Here is what I don't understand. Since when is it not okay to ask the interviewer why they asked that question? - Do you need the job more than they need you? Is that the mentality as to why you don't question your potential boss?

My attitude has always been that they need me more than I need them... that's probably why I never lasted a long time in any job. No, it wasn't arrogance, because I like people and respect them... I just couldn't stand working for someone else's dreams.

25 years after my first job, I ended up being an entrepreneur.

Not only was it inappropriate, it was illegal. No one has the right to ask you if your are married, have children or what your religious preference is during an interview. It can just lead to discrimination.

It is inappropriate. It is none of their business. In some states it is illegal to ask that. Your fiance is right.

Beyond inappropriate, I'm not even sure it's legal. When I was a recruiter, we were told never to ask that question.

It is technically illegal for them to ask. If you don't get the job because you said you were engaged- you have a lawsuit waiting to happen. Of course these are difficult to prove- but a nice settlement can usually be reached.

inappropriate and illegal, that's not a job related question, they can't base their decision of hiring you on the fact that you are married or plan to get married
