The BCE stock challenge is fairly accurate in terms of getting you acquainted with the stock market. As for news sources having a head start, that's almost inevitable, albeit unfair.

If you look at the stock market for short term investments, it is like flipping a coin. In fact an interesting study was done where one portfolio manager picked stocks based on research and another just picked stocks out of a hat.
Over the course of the year their respective performances were similar. Therefore in the short term it is just pure gambling. If you have the patience to invest for 5-10 years, then certainly research comes in handy. Just look at Google. If you got on it when it debuted, you would have made about 500%. That is what Warren Buffet's investment style is. He only invests long term and he only invests in fundamentally sound companies like Walmart and so on.
News, reports, technical analysis really have no meaning and all these "analysts" who make millions are just spewing out baloney. If indeed they knew what they were talking about shouldn't they quit their day jobs and become billionaire investors like Warren Buffet?

To me it has always been roulette. Roulette has always seemed like investing in the stock market. Put your money down, spin the wheel, and see where the ball lands.
That is for the short term fast turn around type investing people do. Buy a stock with hopes it will go up by the next day. Long term investing is a different story though.

Apple. they're high right now but if your time frame is beyond january they're a no brainer. Did you know the iPhone was the biggest selling phone in the US last month? That, and it's implications, is not yet priced in.. and neither is Apple's marketshare being at the tipping point and about to explode. 185 now. 240+ by Jan.. (and if you're lucky you may get a dip to buy at a160 within the next couple of weeks).

I suggest horse or dog racing. All are a gamble and no matter how you read the form there are a vast number of imponderables that can alter the outcome

I would have to say poker. There is some information that you can use to determine strength of your hand (fundamental value), but sometimes you can bluff or be bluffed based on beliefs or what other players do (non-fundamental items, bubbles).
