Greetings,

I purchased a tank and got it all ready to go and let it set for a week before I bought a Bala Shark. I brought an oscar home last Thursday, so I've had him for 4 days counting today.
He hides behind the leaves and won't come out. I had the Bala Shark in the tank also. I was told they were good company for each other.
Anyhow, Saturday I noticed the Bala not doing good. So I watched them for a while and the Oscar was eating him:( So needless to say I flushed him before the Oscar killed him.
I fed the Bala blood worms but the Oscar won't eat them. Now that the Bala is gone the Oscar just lays on the bottom behind the leaves and won't come out. He lays on one side and sometimes doesn't look like he is breathing. I know he hasn't ate since I got him. I've done the water changes and checked everything. I started Melafix treatment today. Will he starving to death?? What should I do??

he is probably just pouting! My wife has one that did the same thing for a couple weeks after she bought him. Just give it time and he will come around. Oscars are characters

A few things

- The previous post is rude, but right. You should not flush live fish down the toilet. Instead, first put the fish out of it's misery by chopping off its head, or freezing it if you don't have the stomach (freezing IS painless for them)

- The behaviour of your Oscar is perfectly normal. Oscars respond to stress by losing their appetite and 'playing dead'. Give him time to adjust and a secure hiding spot. Try feeding him once per day, and if he doesn't eat remove the food and try again tomorrow. It will take him quite a while to starve and he'll eat before that. Don't bug him by tapping the tank, prodding him, or anything like that. Leave him be. It can take a little while for them to come around.

- Oscars and other fish don't make good company. At the very best they'll tolerate other company, at worst they'll kill them. Oscars do best in species tank. The bigger they get, the more aggressive they get, so don't think for a minute you've beaten the odds just because your 4" Oscar gets along with 'fill in the blank'.

okay i have an Oscar and well MANY diffrent fish. Oscars sleep laying on their side so nothing is wrong with that. They can live with certain fish but doesnt necesarily mean all Oscars will get along with those fish, i have mine with a iredicent shark(its a type of catfish) i have had a oscar dye before and the reason was the type of food! Oscars are all difrent like us so i suggest u try Chiclid pelleted food or regular fish flakes maybe they are easier for him to eat. always try somthing new dont be afraid u WILL get difrent results.

before everything, a million oscar desires fifty 5 gallons on the bare minimum, even then he will sense cramped. 2nd, YOUR TANK isn't CYCLED. look up nitrogen cycle and you will understand what i recommend. rigidity zyme and ph pills are no longer stable in any respect. you choose relatively water conditioner like rigidity coat. rigidity zyme is for rigidity on fish and places a coating on the fish. He did no longer choose this in any respect. Your superb wager is in basic terms to take him back to the puppy shop and positively examine this time in the previous you get anymore fish.
