They are one of the fundamentals in learning before a child can speak they absorb the auditory sounds of parents talking, music (singing) and so on, the fact that a child learns to communicate even if hearing impaired in order to express internal desires signifies the importance of communication development skills in children. With out communication the child becomes isolated and unable to express themselves. I hope that helps.

They are very important.
Have you thought about playing foreign language tapes to your child throughout the day. Perhaps French in the morning and Spanish or Chinese in the afternoon. This will provide your child with great language skills as they grow up. Also you have the opportunity to play some great classical music to your child as s/he sleeps providing them with some extra sensory perception of music.
To improve their communications skills try not to speak baby talk to them. Begin a discussion on a serious topic like Global Warming or the pro and cons of Long haul flying. By listening to you chatter about a serious topics they will pick up that life is about serious issues and that there is no opportunity to sit back and enjoy life.

Children live what they learn. This is a true saying. In fact, it is not just a saying, it is life.

We, the parents, teachers, whomever, being responsible for the upbringing of our children must make every effort to ensure they hear and observe what is considered the very best form of behaviour. Whatever they see, they copy; whatever they hear, they repeat.

This is the reason some speak eloquently and others in vernacular or poor grammar. Some don't know how to string a proper sentence together because no one ever taught them how to express themselves effectively.

Always take special care - if you desire that your children or any children in you immediate environment who are looking to you for quidance - are exposed to proper language and modes of communicating with just about anyone. They do have to live in this world which is not so big anymore.

Give them a running start.

Children, without being able to SOMEHOW communicate their wants and needs will eventually become frustrated and you will see behavioral problems emerging. Language is not just verbal however, sign language, a picture exchange system or even other forms of augmentive (computers such as a dynavox) communication are also available. Speaking with a speech pathologist will help you determine what may be best to start with for the child..

Because we are in a predominantly English speaking country our children suffer. I've seen bilingual and trilingual individuals with more extensive vocabularies than single languaged individuals because of the additional understanding.

Not only is it extremely important for children to be able to communicate to us how & what they feel & mean, but in today's world it's equally important and just as easy for them to learn more than one language at as early an age as possible.

It's proven that the older we get the harder it is for us to retain new information, we should give children a head-start!

Very important, if your child doesn't learn how to communicate well when they're old enough they'll have speech issues when they get older. They'd probably have a lot of problems talking to people, and while it won't effect their intelligence at all, our lovely government will want to put them in special ed. Hell the government wanted me in special ed when I was younger because my organizational skills weren't good enough when I was 8.

Language is the basis of the most important aspects of human intelligence. You see, you can't reason about something that you can't name. It's not a real entity to be thought about until you are able to name it and categorize it. "What's that? Oh, a bench...an item of furniture." People with very low vocabularies are mentally handicapped.
