I'm looking into vacationing in europe over the summer, but most travel websites only have packages that stay in one destination the whole time (i.e. 7 days in Paris). I would like to visit several countries if i make the trip. Should I just go and look for a hotel while there? or is there a site where I could reserve hotels in various places (i.e one night in paris, two nights in rome, etc.). Any other advice for a first time visitor? I'm thinking of planning for a mid-August trip, is this an ok time to visit?

Not only is August one of the busiest times for tourists but also for locals. You can expect long lines at most of the popular sites in Europe at this time. As for lodging, during the peak summer months I would advise a reservation, but during off peak you don't need reservations and can find some of the best deals at train stations and airports. The first time I went during the end of Sept. and early Oct. When we got off a train with our luggage often locals that worked for hotels would spot us and asked if we needed a place 2 stay. They would show us brochures for low, med. & high prices places and then we would choose and they would carry our bags as we followed them. We stayed in some lovely Pensiones in Venice (1/2 blk from San Marco square), Florence, Rome (in walking distance from the Coliseum), Corfu, Greece and we got a high rise luxury hotel in Athens for a very reasonable price. We were directed 2 all of these by locals who I believe get some sort of fee for bringing guests. In London and Paris we made reservations as these 2 cities are always busy. You didn't mention if u r a student or have the finances for hotels. There is a big difference if you plan 2 stay at youth hostels which often don't let you check in until evening and then you must depart first thing in the morning. Also, if you are going by yourself there are some single vacations companies that put groups of 18 to 35 year olds together and often have discount accommodations. If you are traveling with someone and are sharing costs then there are lots of different options. If you want 2 ask me specific questions u can e-mail me.

August is fine for the weather but really busy everywhere so you will need reservation in advance, talk to a travel agent, they should have something to different countries. I don't know how long you want to go for, I wouldn't do to many countries at a time, as there is so much to do, you would fell rushed and would not enjoy it as much, in Europe we have a different pace, don't like rushing! you could do Paris for a few days (pretty hot to walk around) then go to south of France or to Barcelona (love this city!) or to Italy (Tuscany is great!) or even Greece (to some of the island. I would just do 2 or 3 different places max! Have fun!

Mid August is probably the busiest time of the year, it is when the school holidays are and so many hotels will be charging higher than normal prices, You can book as you go along if your confident enough to do this, here in the UK we have many good motel chains, "Premier travel inn" and "Travel lodge" to name just 2, rooms are around £50 a night but you can get deals if you book in advance. I don't know about other countries but August is one of the warmest times of the year here.

All travel agencies offer multiple destination packages. They even offer you the choice of independent tours or guided tours and they can last anywere from 7 days to 45 days.
Mid August is summer time all accross Europe and it is high season so expect higher prices, crowded places and flight delays.
Some of the destinations are cheaper because they are more popular: England/France for example. Others are more expensive but you can always find excellent offers.
Try: Icelandair packages, Trafalgar, Cosmos, Brandon, Barton, just to name a few.
Good luck and enjoy.

Sounds like you are looking for a Contiki trip.

I did a 21 day trip around Europe went to 10 different countries.

All the accomodation and some meals are provided for.

You will meet so many people, there is a night life as well and you get heaps of advice from the tour manager about the best places to go in each city.

It sounds like what you are looking for as you spend about 2 nights in each capital city. I loved it because you just sit back, relax and enjoy. All the headache stuff is taken care of for you...PERFECT!
