Hello Lauraboo, I have been to Ghana in March 2006 and my life hasnt been the same since:-) I FELL IN LOVE WITH GHANA!!!! I am a white man (Obruni, in Ghana) and I am an American, I was treated like family everywhere I visited in Ghana. The hospitality of Ghana is greater than I have ever noticed anywhere on earth. I traveled to Accra, Cape Coast, Kumasi, Tema, Teshie, and Takoradi.
I did have some culture shock at first when I seen all the vendors on the street and campfires at night in the city limits on the streets where vendors were simply cooking food over open fires. And my eyes had a hard time with the fact I seen goats and chickens roaming the public streets hahahaha. Thats simply because thats not allowed in America. But you know what? I got over that very quickly and then I thought that that was soooo neat!! When I was there I actually fell in love with a Ghanaian woman at a restaurant in Accra called the "Biz Morgans Restaraunt" and now I am travelling back to Accra in a month or to God willing so we can be married:-)
The only regret I have about Ghana is that I didnt try enough Ghanaian foods while I was there. I promise that will change this time around though. My future wife will see to that Im sure lol.
I loved seeing the Oburi Gardens, and we stopped at a national rain forest to while there and walked on its rope cat walk high above the forest floor. Also while there we stopped at a slave castle at the Elmina Castle in Cape Coast. Wow! What goes through your mind when you visit a place like that! Also stopped at a old slave place called "The last walk". It was the actually beaten path that was walked in Ghana by the slaves while still in Ghana before getting on a boat headed for there european or American destination headed for slavery:-( That actually brought tears to my eyes!

In Accra June then again in July 06, all being well be back again in December this year.
Last time we started just north of Accra (Pantang Hospital, 2 miles beyond Adenta) then to Upper East Region - Bolga and Bawku before back to Accra. Next time hoping to stay in Kumasi, Sunyani and Tamale.
Aren't the people there incredibly friendly? The nicest people you could ever wish to meet. I hope you had as good a time as we did. I loved it so much over there that I'm hoping to build a house, possibly near Tema or Aburi and also to set up a learning centre to teach IT and building skills.
As for the food - not so keen. The traditional food such as TZ, banku and fufu is too bland for me and the meat and fish is always much too well cooked. Had talapia and it was like trying to eat an old boot. Did find a couple of really good restaurants in the Madina district of Accra that did excellent European food - Red Lobster and Hollywood Restaurant. Best place I found for food was the Next Corner Restaurant on the beach heading out of Accra.
Many good memories of being there and I'm really looking forward to going back. Made loads of friends that I keep in contact with and it will be great to see them again.

I was there for 4 days in March, 2006. It was my first time in Africa and I saw a lot of amazing things. I had the luck to be working with a local from Accra and he took me to the family home and showed me his dad's workshop. That was all amazing for me.
I also went to some small villages near Ho in the east of the country to do some interviews and take some photos. Everyone was very friendly. Life is fairly hard there, but I met volunteers who had a strong drive to improve their lives.
The kids from the local school were great and loved having their photo taken, although I think I disturbed their classes a lot that day.
I'd definitely go back for a holiday one day.
I liked a lot of the food, but I did end up with a couple of weeks of "stomach troubles" from something I ate there. Nothing too serious though. It was interesting that everywhere you looked, Guinness seemed to be on sale!
