I would just like to know if the same cows raised for beef production are used for leather or if, in effect, extra cows are killed just for leather. Anyone know?

Leather comes from the hides of cattle slaughtered for meat.

Most leather comes from beef cattle but old dairy cows are sent to market and used for pet food. Their skin is tanned into leather.

Every single part of the cow is used for something. Which means the skin of a cow is turned into leather.

Most leather is obtained from cattle (mostly steers and heifers) who are slaughtered for meat. As someone already mentioned there are some dairy cattle slaughtered and they may also be used for leather. Some breeds produce better leather, but even if they are slaughtered for their hide the meat is still processed.
