Yes, trucking is a professional job. Each state has a motor vehicle office (DMV) that will provide you the requirements for what we call inter-state driving; and the trucking industry calls it Over the Road (OTR). First their are different classes of truck driving based on whether the truck has air brakes or not. Trucks with air brakes are classified as a Class A truck and requires a commercial drivers license (CDL) of CDL Class A endorsement on a persons drivers license. Those trucks that are up to a certain weight (in gross vehicle weight) and have no air brakes are classified as Class B trucks and require a CDL Class B endorsement. Also if you drive a truck that regularly hauls hazardous material you will need to take a test to get a Hazardous Material endorsement on your Class A or Class B CDL license. At the moment heavy truck (we call them lorrys) drivers are at a premium , there are many vacancys here i sugest you look on the British web , jobs vacant first

Should be easy enough to get a job, although most "Septics" seem unable to cope with rounadbouts so might not be a good idea.....
