It means the connecting rod between the crank shaft and the piston has broken.
Worst case scenairo. Rod has gond through the engine. Engine is definitely junk
Possible worse case: The engine cylinders have been scraped up and damaged beyond repair. You won't know this unless you take the engine apart. Engine is junk
Rod broke but did no damage to cylinder walls. Replace rod, recommend a complete engine rebuild if your taking it this far. Very expensive.
I recommend simply getting a replacement engine or a junk yard engine and placing it in the car instead of dealing with the thrown rod. Too many unknowns and it will be expensive to take it apart to determine if it's even worth fixing.

When you "throw" a rod in an engine, two things happen:
1) Unfortunately, your luck ran out, and
2) It will cost you allot of money to fix it!
Seriously, you need an engine mechanic - the "rod" you refer to is the rod connecting the head of a piston to the crankshaft. You probably heard some "banging" engine noises before engine stopped. So things are now "jammed up" inside your engine. Hopefully, the rod did not cause other damage internally.

The rod is the connection from the crank to the piston. when you trow a rod it can mean everything from a bad bearing to a complete failure where the rod is pushed through the side of the engine block. Either way you need a new engine,

the rod gets shot into the upper part of the block. As far as I know only a professional re-tool shop can repair it. So you will end up buying a new engine.

In the most extreme form it will poke a hole in the block rendering it useless.
Look for used motors or time for a new car

that reminds me of the time a guy took his car to a local shop for repair, after looking at it the mechanic said,
looks like you blew a seal,
to which the customer said,
leave my personal life out of this.
