The first thing you need to realize is that everyone is shy. I know that concept is hard to believe at times but it is true. The other thing is all teenagers feel this lack of self confidence. Some make amends for this by being bullies, or making fun of others. Others just shrink in the corner.
You are lucky to have three best friends. Be thankful them. You need to find something you enjoy doing and become good at. Maybe a course in Karate. It helps you physically and mentally. It also gives you the confidence that you can defend yourself.
When you start a conversation with someone, ask them a question that they can't say yes or no to. Something they have to give an answer to, sometimes this will spark a conversation.
Remember all the feelings you have are normal. So be easy on yourself.
Everyone says the teenage years are great, but they really rot. I wouldn't want to be a teenager again. I am sure you have a lot of wonderful traits.
Next time you see someone who looks lonely, go over and say hello, what's your name? It's hard but I think you will find a lot of teens feel like you do.
Good Luck

It's a possibility that you have what is called Social Anxiety Disorder. That is an actual disorder that people have that causes them to feel afraid to be around other people because they are afraid of what others think about them. Maybe you should talk to a counselor or a doctor. Being that shy and that afraid is not a healthy thing.
SOmetimes you just have to learn to tell yourself that there are things about yourself that you cannot change. If you have a good personality and you are good to other people then YOU are truly a beautiful person. People tend to forget what true beauty is. If people pick on you, it is because they have issues with themselves and picking on others is just their way of expressing misery. They think that if they pick on another person, they will look better and feel better about themselves.
Be confident, everyone is different, everyone has their own set of problems, we all have different talents, and so on, it's what makes the world go around. :)

Confidence is not something you can teach. It is tough to break into the mentality that you shouldn't care what people think. My advice would be to act yourself and have fun with everyone. Who cares if they make fun of you. F them. If they judge you by how you look there obviously not friends you should have anyway. Just make sure treat people with respect and the rest will follow. If having someone tell you your ugly is the worst thing that will happen to you in your life...well you have a very bright future ahead of you. Kepp your head up and have fun. Life is too short to worry about things that are so meaningless.

Just walk right up to people and ask to be their partner or in their group. I have no true friends at my school currently, so I often find myself working alone. But when we HAVE to get into groups, I ask people that I know kinda like me in like a tolerant sort of way if I can be in their group. And most of the time, they like me for who I am and don't judge me, and we have a good time. Just go for it! What have you got to lose?

Practice and more practice,I was once a very shy guy,But i told myself i no longer want to be like this.So what i did was talk more, say hi,say goodmorning, talk to strangers who seem kind.I have taken self esteem course, life skills, and counselling. But what others think of you is none of your business.I encourage you to hang with others who have alot self confidence and learn from them. But be good to your self and don't give up.Wish you the best.Peace Victorio

imagine new people as friends you've known for year, just that you've forgotten their name. But some of these people are too dumb to understand what a real conversation is suppose to be like so ignore them.

You have social anxiety. You should see a therapist and ask about something like Zoloft or Xanax. I take Xanax and it really helps with my anxiety and I don't feel any side effects or anything. You should really consider this and if it doesn't work...then stop taking it. It's worth a shot.
